Internet is alien language for cops in the city

ImageBangalore is the IT capital of the country, but one third of the state's police force is computer illiterate and do not know how to use the Internet.

This was revealed in a study conducted by the Public Affair Centre, a citybased NGO, on the police work culture in the state.

The state police department had asked the NGO to conduct the study to know the condition of the force and give them a facelift.

The study was conducted on 100 police stations in six police zones and three police commissionerates across the state.

The study also says that the illiteracy is due to the considerable "educational" gap between the

new and the old generation of the police.
As many as 53 per cent of the police force has not had any kind of training since their induction in the force.

State plans for extra 500 mld water for city

ImageThe state government is planning to get Bangalore an additional 500 million litres water per day (mld) in the future.

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu on Sunday said it will be pumped from other sources.

The work for the project may be allotted in the next six months, he said.

The minister, who inspected the work at the Cauvery IV Stage II Phase drinking water project on Sunday, said the plan was made keeping the demand in the future in mind.

"According to estimates, the city would need at least 2,000 mld of potable water by 2025," he said. "We are making plans to meet that demand to avoid the sort of water scarcity that the city is facing now."

He said the project will be completed by 2013.

"We are also planning to recycle 1,000 mld of sewage and supply it for nonpotable purposes," he said. "This will make the supply for the 3,000 mld by 2014."

Night safari at Bannerghatta National Park

ImageTourism and Infrastructure Minister G Janardhana Reddy on Friday said work on the night safari project at the Bannerghatta National Park would start in a couple of weeks.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the Conventions India Conclave.

He said the project, which is being undertaken at the cost of Rs 180 crore, would be the first of its kind in the country.

Conservationists have argued that traffic at night would affect the animals.

Reddy said there were also plans to start three heli-tourism circuits in the state, which would be operational by end of September.

Bangalore teacher allegedly sexually harassed students

High school students of Swami Vivekananda Vidyalaya in Bangalore were allegedly sexually harassed by a language teacher for the past two years. And a complaint was recently filed with the State Woman and Child Commission.

Based on the information, a team of officials led by Chairperson Nina Nayak visited the school on Thursday and conducted an inquiry.

The girls alleged that the teacher would often ask them to stay back after school hours, touch them inappropriately and pass comments.

"Preliminary inquiry revealed that the allegation made in the complaint seems to be true," Naik told MiD DAY, adding that the commission has summoned the school authorities and the accused teacher to appear before it.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the school authorities, they immediately shifted the accused teacher to a non-teaching job, till the inquiry is completed.

"We could not take strict action, as no student who has been harassed is willing to file an FIR fearing the long judicial proceedings," said an officer in the commission.

The commission received a letter few days ago alleging that Rathod, a Hindi teacher with the school, has been sexually harassing female students.

Rain-washed, city crawls on Thursday

ImageOnce again, rain brought Bangalore traffic to a halt and uprooted trees in several parts of the city.

Though no damage to life and property was reported, power supply at several places in the city was affected due to the line failures.

Power supply was disrupted at Lingarajpuram, Banaswadi, Kalyanagar and HBR Layout due to 20mm rain received by the city.

According to BESCOM officials, this happens whenever the city receives continuous rains and said a team was deputed to set everything right.

Uprooting of trees was reported from RT Nagar, Kammanahalli and Dinnur Main Road. The BBMP control room said four trees were uprooted.

The worst-hit were the commuters who faced traffic jams all over the city due to waterlogging.

The worst-hit were Jayamahal, JC Nagar, Mekhri circle, Mysore Road, Peenya and Yeshwanthpur.
