Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh chaired a stormy session on Bt brinjal as the final nationwide consultative meet in Bangalore climaxed with pro- and anti-Bt brigades trying to have their say on the issue on Saturday.
The meet started off with farmers, civil society organisations and NGOs shouting slogans against Bt brinjal.
At one instance, Ramesh also lost his temper when Santosh, an ayurvedic doctor, accused him of being an “agent” of Monsanto. An angry Ramesh said, “I am sorry, I don’t want to talk to health patients and you require mental help.” As the meet turned stormy, Ramesh quipped, “This is not Vidhana Soudha or Lok Sabha.” On conclusion of the meeting, which was held at the Central College campus, Ramesh was asked what his final decision on the matter would be. “I am not an extremist. |

Farmers’ leader Kuruburu Shantakumar, speaking on behalf of the agitating students said, “Injustice is being meted out by the BBMP to the students of the agricultural university.
They are hampering the research”.
Shantakumar said, “It is an insult, since all this research would have benefited the farmers. The government is doing nothing about it”. He said that he would support the students’ agitation and if needed, mobilise the farmers to camp at the university. |

The High Court on Tuesday issued notices to 66 MLAs and MLCs, including four ministers, who were allotted ‘G’ category sites by the Bangalore Development Authority.
The division bench comprising justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice AS Bopanna issued the notices to chief secretary, Urban Development, and 66 MLAs and MLCs, after hearing the public interest litigation filed by S Vasudeva.
The petitioner challenged the government’s notification on February 28, 2009, allotting BDA sites to 66 MLAs and MLCs of both the ruling and opposition parties under the ‘G’ category. The petitioner also sought the Court to quash the notification.
S Vasudeva also challenged rule 5 of the BDA Act, 1976, which empowers the CM to allot ‘G’ category sites to public figures.
The MLAs and MLCs possess sites in their respective constituencies.
Whenever they require to attend the legislative session, they are accommodated at the Legislature’s Home, so there was no need to allot sites for them to stay, Vasudeva argued. |

Fire broke out at the valuation centre of the Bangalore University at its Jnanabharati campus on Monday evening. The extent of damage caused and the reason for the fire are yet to be ascertained.
BU registrar Prof MG Krishnan, however, suspected that the fire accident to be “intentional”.
“Fire broke out in two different rooms on different floors. There was no chance of it spreading across these two rooms, if it was accidental.
It looks intentional,” he said.
The fire broke out around 6 pm, after all the staff at the valuation centre, located next to the administration block, had left for the day. |
