Hyderabad defeat Bangalore in IPL final

Monday, 25 May 2009
ImageThe Deccan Chargers fought off Anil Kumble's 4 for 16 spell Sunday to defeat the Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League cricket final in South Africa.

The Johannesburg thriller saw Herschelle Gibbs (53 not out) and Andrew Symonds (33 in 21 balls) take Hyderabad's total to 143-6 in 20 overs, enough to register a six-run win over the Bangalore team's 137 for 9 in the same number of overs, the BBC reported.

The Chargers thus erased their ignominious record of finishing at the bottom in the IPL's first season last year.

This year's matches were moved to foreign venues because of the month-long general elections in India and security concerns there.

Bangalore schools clock 100% in ICSE, CBSE

Thursday, 21 May 2009
ImageIt was centums and distinctions all the way. Naturally, there was jubilation in all ICSE/CBSE schools in Karnataka on Wednesday when the Class 10 (ICSE) and 12 (ISC) results and Class 12 results of CBSE were declared.

Bangalore students put up a stunning performance with almost all schools recording cent per cent results. Clearly, 60% and 70% marks were frowned upon or never discussed amongst students as a majority of them scored distinction — 85% and above. Karnataka secured the second position in the Southern region in CBSE by recording a pass percentage of 96.4 as against last year’s 96.57. As is the practice, girls outscored boys and recorded 96.77% pass. But the boys were not too far away — they recorded 96.11%.

Wednesday, 20 May 2009
ImageJacques Kallis struck an unbeaten 58 and took a key wicket as Royal Challengers Bangalore beat leaders Delhi Daredevils by seven wickets Tuesday to stay in the Indian Premier League title hunt.

The big South African batted throughout the 19-over Bangalore innings as they reached 135-3 in reply to 134-7 in 20 overs from Delhi, who are sure to finish first with one round of group fixtures left.

But below them the stage is set for a thrilling climax to the round-robin phase of the Twenty20 extravaganza on Wednesday and Thursday with five franchises chasing three semi-finals places.
