Government hospitals in Bangalore don't have ICU

Tuesday, 15 July 2008
Government hospitals in Bangalore, barring Victoria, don't have an ICU. There are four major government hospitals. In an emergency where patients require ICU care, doctors advise them to shift to hospitals with ICU facility. Nearly 70% stay back as they can't afford private hospitals.

For instance, the over 100-year-old Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital attends to nearly 1,000 outpatients every day, apart from inpatients. It has a bed capacity of 686. This hospital doesn't have an intensive care unit (ICU) or a postoperative ward. Doctors are forced to shift patients immediately after surgery to general ward, where they are more susceptible to infections.

With no independent operation theatres, the hospital's six OTs are shared across the specialities, with three allocated for gynaecology and the rest shared between neurology, orthopaedic, forcing the doctors to delay the surgeries.

Vijay Mallya upbeat on brand new wide-bodied Airbus A330-200

Tuesday, 15 July 2008
ImageKingfisher Airlines, with its funky stand-up bars, massage chairs personally designed by Vijay Mallya, and its ubiquitous hordes of red-clad girls, is going ahead with its slew of international flight plans despite the downturn in the aviation industry – London first, followed by San Francisco, maybe New York, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Middle East.

However, it is planning to go slow on its hectic aircraft acquisition plan for domestic aircraft. "After our comprehensive review of our domestic network, we may not want as many narrow-bodied aircraft as we had initially estimated." said Vijay Mallya. Kingfisher has about $7 billion worth of new aircraft on the way.

Showing off his brand new wide-bodied Airbus A330-200 at the Farnborough air show in England, Vijay Mallya is confident that despite the downturn, Kingfisher can make an impact with its trademark five star positioning on key routes – with a focus on more direct and non-stop flights from its Bangalore hub to overseas destinations. Bangalore is still not as well served as Mumbai or Delhi with direct flights to London or the west Coast of US.

Bangalore airport capacity may double

Sunday, 13 July 2008
Civil aviation minister Praful Patel has directed Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the Siemens-led private consortium developing the new greenfield airport, to increase its capacity to handle passengers.

According to sources in the civil aviation ministry, the current passenger handling capacity of the Bangalore airport is 11 million per annum.

Sources in the civil aviation ministry said that BIAL has been told to create a second terminal which will be an exact replica of the existing terminal within the next three years. This would more than double the capacity of the airport.

Till that terminal is not completed, BIAL has been asked to make arrangements to increase its capacity in the next eight months. Sources in the ministry said that Patel was "not happy with the new airport"
