Bangalore city police may be driving home the point that their firearms are more than psychological aids. After chain snatchers in the city were shot at during their capture, it was now the turn of a group of dacoits to draw fire from the city’s law enforcers.
Acting on a tip-off from a traffic constable who witnessed a couple being robbed, the Madiwala police raided the robbers’ hideout in Hongasandra in wee hours of Monday.
In the encounter that followed, police shot at the gang injuring two of them. One of the criminals managed to get away, but the rest of the gang has been apprehended. The accused who are under custody have been identified as Ambarish (24),Venugopal (24), Rajashekar and Sunil. The police are searching for the fifth dacoit, Vinay.
On Monday afternoon around 12.45 pm, Reshma D’Souza and her husband Prakash D’Souza were returning home. They were intercepted by a gang of five men, who brandished a knife and demanded valuables. When Reshma tried to protest, the dacoits threatened to rape her. The scared couple gave away cash and valuables, including a gold chain, totalling to about Rs 60,000.
As luck would have it, a constable from Mico Layout Traffic police station, who was returning home witnessed the incident. The constable informed the control room. |

Test results for both victims showing they had been infected by the swine flu arrived only on Sunday, a health official said here.
