Swine flu has been causing a pandemic in many Asian neighbors' home country and also in other parts of India. The last count I heard was that 22 cases of the H1N1 virus has been confirmed in different parts of India. The IT capital of Bangalore has remained untouched for so long. Not anymore, though.
This weekend, we had a 29-year-old mother and her three-year-old daughter land in Bengaluru International Airport from New Jersey on Friday. Both were tested positive for the H1N1 virus!! This is the first confirmed case of the deadly virus in Bangalore.
The samples of the duo were sent over to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, from Bangalore's Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), and the positive results arrived on Saturday. It seems the woman had arrived with her two daughters in Bangalore to spend their summer vacation with family members and relatives.
Looks like the screening facility (that has drawn much criticism) at Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) is working well. A few days earlier there were reports that BIA had requested for advanced thermal screening devices, but the Government had shelved it citing lack of funds. Later, there were reports about BIA asking for more doctors to man the screening process, but it sanctioned only 50 percent of the number of doctors needed. |

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday June 9, warned the officials who behave arrogantly and carelessly with the general public and the people's representatives, that he would be compelled to crack the whip if they do not mend their ways. He repeated this warning he made on these lines in earlier meetings, at a meeting of the regional commissioners, deputy commissioners and zilla panchayat chief executive officers held here on Tuesday June 9.
"The people neither want nor like high-handed officers who are intoxicated with power. They can not tolerate such behaviour. The officials have to correct their style of functioning and behave in a way that is in tune with our culture. “I do not want to punish any one, however, I will be compelled to take stern action if they do not work as per the expectations of the government and the people," he added.
He assured, that those officials who work efficiently and honestly, will get full support of the government. If they fail to work conscientiously and diligently, the government will have to explore other options, he said in a veiled threat. The CM expressed his displeasure at the less-than satisfactory progress achieved in some of the districts. He added, that he has already instructed the chief secretary to make a list of inefficient officials. |

Personnel of the Madras Engineer Group (MEG) and Centre on Tuesday started the search for the body of Abhishek Prakash, who was washed away in a drain in Lingarajapuram on May 31.
On Tuesday, the area around the raja kaluve at Hennur Bande in Hennur, where the body of Abhishek is suspected to have got stuck in the weeds and debris, looked like an Army camp with around 60 personnel of MEG and Centre and 50 gangmen from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) having started a four-day joint operation.
Nearly 15 tonnes of weeds and debris from the lake have been removed.
Starting their operations around 6 a.m., the MEG and Centre personnel used small boats to de-weed the lake. The search will continue for the next three days, as the personnel will search for the body in all connecting drains and pits at the lake. |

Children are sold every morning in Bangalore, and MiD DAY 'bought' four for just Rs 3,000 on Saturday.
After we came to know of a well-organised racket near the city railway station, we posed as restaurant owners looking for child labourers, and contacted four touts on Friday, June 4.
They readily agreed to find us child labourers, but said they were "out of stock" that day. Â They promised a deal if we went early the next morning. A tout who called himself Ravi said, "Business is not so easy these days... we have to contend with competition and the activists. We can manage the police, but the media are dangerous."
Dawn deal
We met him at the railway station. Earlier, two others we met had discussed the sale of children right in front of the Upparpet police station.
A tout on Kempe Gowda Road asked about our requirements openly. A constable heard us but just ignored us. The next day, Ravi was waiting for us near the gate of the railway station. He came running to us and said "Stocks available." He seemed anxious that we would contact other touts. He told us to wait in the car park. Within minutes, he came to us with four boys: Aruna (12), Varuna (11), Dilip (looks 16), and Nanda (looks 17). |
