The Bangalore police on Sunday shot at Harish Tolar (33), an alleged associate of underworld don Ravi Poojary, who reportedly ran an extortion racket in the city, particularly targeting industrialists and real estate bigwigs.“He tried to attack our men, who in defence shot him in the legs,” Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari told here . The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the Jnanajyothi campus of Bangalore University. The city police, who have been cracking down on Ravi Poojary’s henchmen, got a hint of Tolar’s movement in the Jnanajyothi campus. A City Crime Branch police team pursued his car, which stopped after it hit a cement pipe. Mr. Bidari said Tolar reached for his gun to shoot the police officers but the latter shot at him first. He has been admitted to Victoria Hospital. The city police have been making arrests in connection with Ravi Poojary’s extortion calls to various industrialists and builders in the city, and Tolar is said to be one of the 14 associates of the don who have been arrested so far. A month-and-a-half ago, the city police arrested six men, and seven more were arrested from a Gandhinagar hotel on June 11. Based on information gathered from them, the police started the hunt for Tolar. |
