Nithyananda not in public due to security reason

ImageIn what is a new turn to the Swami Nithyananda scandal, the spokesperson of his Bidadi ashram said on Monday that the godman wants to break his silence but was not making a public appearance ‘due to security reasons.’ Swami Sachidananda, the spokesperson of Nithyananda Dhyanapeetm, Bidadi said, “Give us some time. Swami Nithyananda will speak soon.” On Nithyananda’s whereabouts, Sachidananda told mediapersons that the swami was attending the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.

Meanwhile, local police officials said that they have not been given charge of the case yet. On Sunday, Tamil Nadu police had said that the case will be transferred to Karnataka as most of the alleged criminal acts were said to have taken place in the Bidadi ashram.

Janardhan Reddy calls Congress MLC ‘broker’

ImageTourism Minister G Janardhan Reddy lost his temper, once again. On Wednesday, in the Legislative Council, Reddy called senior Congress MLC K C Kondaiah a ‘broker’ while accusing him of looting mining wealth of the state conniving with few mining companies.

Reddy’s sudden outburst came when Kondaiah accused the state government of adopting different yardsticks in giving permits to mineral transport in Bellary district.

While those ion the ruling party got on-the-spot permissions, other applicants had been made to wander for months despite fulfilling all requirements, he said.

Prepare to pay 10% more for water

ImageBWSSB is likely to hike water tariff by approximately 8 to 10 per cent in view of the recent hike in power tariffs.

P B Ramamurthy, BWSSB chairman told reporters on the sidelines of an interactive meet organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) that he has asked the government to increase the water prices in proportion to the recent hike in power tariffs.

BWSSB is among the largest consumers of power and annually pays around Rs 260 crore as electricity bill to Bescom, which is 51 per cent of its annual expenditure.

Further, a hike in water prices would also help the board to meet its deficit of Rs 45.97 crore.

3 Nigerians held for online fraud

ImageThe Cyber Crime Police Station of CID, Bangalore has busted an online lottery racket involving three Nigerians.

They were using black-inked dollars and cheating people online.

The accused have been identified as Collins Osarbo Jacobs (37), Bamidele Emmanuel Kent (38) and Godson Omorodion alias Junior alias Sir Joseph (36), all from Nigeria. CID officers said the passports of two had already expired and they were based in Mumbai.

Emails sent by them were traced to Mumbai.

Based on a complaint lodged by a retired officer, the cyber crime police took up the case. The complainant had allegedly received an email from a person calling herself Mrs Linda Joy, from Fedex company, who said that a parcel containing an international cashier bank draft/cheque worth USD 800,000 will be delivered to him for winning a lottery, only if he delivered his information.

City short on water too; monsoon’s the only hope

ImageWill it be a difficult summer for Bangaloreans this time? The answer is yes at least for the areas that were added to the city not long ago.

The situation is likely to improve only by the end of 2011 when the Cauvery IV stage II phase project is scheduled to be completed and the city will get an additional 500 million litres per day (MLD) and Cauvery water can be supplied to even the far flung areas.

The growing demand for water in the city and the depleting ground water levels are making the job of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) that much more difficult.

Apart from the mantra of judicious and equitable distribution to the different parts of the city, BWSSB chairman PB Ramamurthy stresses the need for all households to instal rainwater harvesting systems that was made mandatory recently.

Rainwater harvesting recharges groundwater, besides taking off the burden on BWSSB, he explains.
