Brinda, Patkar Demand CBI Enquiry into Church Attacks

ImageNational Alliance of People’s Movement (NAPM) leader Medha Patkar and CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat have demanded a CBI enquiry into the Church attacks in Orissa and Karnataka.

They were addressing a massive rally organised under the banner ‘Save Democracy Save Secularism’ by Bangalore Citizen’s Initiative here on Monday.

Patkar said that it was the strategic plan of BJP to create a vote bank in all the states where it was in power. “There has not been a single forcible conversion. It is a clever poly of the Sangh Parivar to annihilate all other religions in India. Nurturing one’s cultural traits is everybody’s right. Those who want to negate such right have no place in India,” she said.

Bangalore infrastructure to get boost

ImageKarnataka Government is keen on developing the Bangalore City is infrastructure by extending the Metro rail up to Electronic City and widening roads in the next two years. This was announced by the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa at a function organised by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to initiate work on two flyovers here.

As many as 1187 roads in the limits of old Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will be developed at a cost of Rs. 300 crores. A sum of Rs. 100 crores had already been spent, he said.

A total 1550 roads falling under the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will also be developed as per the recommendations of the Agenda for Bangalore Infrastructure Development (ABIDe). The project included expansion and widening of the existing roads, quality improvement of the surface and formation of new roads at a cost of Rs. 750 crores. The BDA will fund the projects, the Chief Minister told presspersons.
 

Aussies fly to Bangalore for Test

ImageThe Australians fly to Bangalore on Monday to begin preparations for Thursday's first Test against India but Ricky Ponting's team appear less ready for the task than they would like to be.

Despite a week-long camp in Jaipur and a solid work-out against the Indian Board President's XI, the tourists still look short of match practice and confidence before taking on an ageing but star-studded India.

Of chief concern for Ponting is the form of spinner Jason Krejza, who must now be considered unlikely to make his Test debut in Bangalore following match figures of 0-199 from 31 overs in Hyderabad.

IBM employee found murdered in Bangalore

A 25-year-old IBM employee was found murdered in his house on Saturday night in Hosahalli in Vijayanagar. The deceased identified as Manoj Kumar, an MBA graduate, had been gagged; his hands and legs were tied with a cloth. He is suspected to have been strangulated to death. Manoj’s valuables, including car and a two-wheeler, has been found missing from the house.

Manoj, a native of Chennarayapatna in Hassan, had been working with the Bannerghatta branch of the company for eight months. His father Subbegowda is a BMTC bus conductor. Subbegowda used to travel daily from Chennarayapatna to Bangalore for work. He used to speak to his son daily.

On Saturday, when Manoj was not answering his father’s calls on the mobile phone since 12 pm, Subbegowda suspected that something had happened. He informed Manoj’s cousin Prakash to check his house in Vijayanagar.

Christian prayer hall attacked in Bangalore

ImageA Christian prayer hall in Bangalore and a church in Bantwal were attacked on Friday night even as Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa maintained that “everything is under control.”

While the prayer hall near the police station at Yelahanka here was vandalised and the Bible burnt, the church was attacked at Shamboor village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

Some persons entered the prayer hall and burnt the Bible and two song books. They also damaged the pulpit, a lamp, a clock and two tube-lights. “They barged into the prayer hall and caused the damage,” Bangalore city Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari said.
